a gunman in georgia just went on a shooting spree targeting asian owned business in a hate crime involving 8 deaths of people with varying nationalities (6 asian, with 1 white woman and 1 white man) last night. (click on photos to enlarge, credits to @frogvk on twitter for the graphics)
here is a twitter thread and constantly updating, currently active google doc that contains the gofundmes, paypals, cashapps, etc of victims of anti-asian hate crimes, asian-owned small businesses, and asians who need financial aid. please consider donating & boosting and adding more donation links if you have them.
To other Asian-Americans out there, I hope you’re doing ok mentally and staying safe physically in light of recent events. To everyone else as well, please remember a few things as you support Asian-American communities
- This is absolutely no reason to talk over BLM or pitch either communities against each other. We need to be uplifting of one another against white supremacy. Know that the phrase Asian Lives Matter, while with good intentions, does the same harm as All Lives Matter. Promote these phrases instead when possible: StopAsianHate, TheyCantBurnUsAll, AsiansAreHumans, ProtectAsianLives
- Remember that there are regions outside of East Asia—most of the victims in Atlanta were Southeast Asians. SE Asians often face more racism and are even more heavily underrepresented in media, they deserve full protection and support as well. Blasian (black/asian) people exist too and they should not be overlooked either
- Refrain from insensitive phrases along the lines of “if you like anime/kpop/vocaloid you should be paying attention” because you should not need a reason to care about human lives. Not only do these usually refer exclusively to East Asia media, our worth isn’t based on how much our content entertains you
- While I am referring to an incident in America, be mindful that racism against Asians does not only happen in the US. Anti-Asian racism has ridiculously spiked in Europe as well (within the UK, Italy, Greece, Spain, France, Germany to name a few countries specifically) as a result of the pandemic

recently there has been a lot of violence and abuse towards the asian community, particularly to the elderly. i’ve only seen these stories covered on asian platforms like nextshark or through asian influencers and activists.
i wanted to find some resources to reblog on tumblr to raise awareness, but having the word “asian” in my search just took me to suggestive content (which speaks to another large issue in the asian community, and in case you weren’t aware, recently apple’s adult content filter blocked the word asian from its browser search).
since i couldn’t find posts talking about this, i just wanted to share some of the horrible things that have been happening lately because i believe this needs more coverage and awareness:

- thai man, 84, dies after being attacked in broad daylight in san francisco (1) (2)
- 70 year old grandmother robbed on her way home (1) (2)
- 64 year old grandmother robbed of $1000 in san jose
- asian man beaten and robbed of around $15 000
- elderly chinese couple beaten, wife dies from injuries
- 9 asian-owned businesses have their windows smashed in oregon
- oakland chinatown hit with over 20 attacks targeting elderly in 2 weeks (1) (2)
i know anti asian discrimination is on the rise and it’s been in the back of my mind ever since my dad warned me about going out on my own bc he knew some friends of his had got beaten up and so i try to be careful.
but now these shootings in atlanta make it so very real and in my face. i live pretty close there and it’s like my aunt who’s a nail tech goes there pretty often for supplies. idk i just need everyone to be aware of how bad this is getting.
lately i just see ppl completely brushing aside anti asian racism. you have no idea how many comments i’ve seen saying that asian ppl are basically white... it’s laughable bc we have never been treated as such. especially for me being a tan SE asian. it’s like ppl forget about SE and south asians who are very much being targeted as well. i don’t even know where i’m going w this! it’s just frustrating. idk do what you can maybe donate or smth especially since you guys heavily consume asian media like show up for us too not just for our culture

I know it's cold, I have some tips for you, thanks to having been through this before, many times. (spool of thread emoji)
Please RT the thread if you know anyone without power currently! (black heart emoji)
-Choose 1 room to inhabit
-Move all furniture to external walls
-Move your mattress to the center of the 1 room
-Block pets from leaving that room, put all needs in it
-If your fridge is warming up, put all perishable items in a trash bag and place outside, form snow around
-If you have plants, move them in the room with you
-If you have a small space heater, move it in the room with you
-Hang thick blankets or large towels in all the windows
-If a sunny day arrives before power, open curtains when sun hits directly, then put back up
-Wear multiple layers of clothing
-If your pets are too cold, put socks on their feet and/or clothing you have that fits them
-roll clothing or towels and block all door and window gaps
-Throw all your dirty clothes on the floor, covering every space you can
Your body heat will warm that room if you remain in ONLY that room. You want to use anything you can to add insulation between you, and the outside. Hence covering and blocking all floors, windows, and walls. Now isn't the time to have a clean house, it's the time to survive.

If you have, or can get, bubble wrap, tape that to all windows, as it creates a kind of double insulation!
